Every student has to complete 20 hours of community work. The group of 100 students is divided into 5 groups. Each group plans and executes the community work each year. Certain groups perform the community work on 2 or 3 days by staying with a community and do several activities. Other groups identify different NGOs working in various parts of Goa and work with them over a period of time.
“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others,” were the words of Mahatma Gandhi. Realising the worth of the word ‘service,’ the students of GVM’s Dr. Dada Vaidya College of Education set out for a noble mission of spreading light in this world. The students undertook community service in groups in the years 2014-2015, each had to complete twenty hours of community service. The students rendered their service in NGO’s like ‘Isha Kripa Sadan’ in Siolim,- a shelter home for children specially the orphans and the destitute, ‘Lifeline Foundation’ in Panjim- the tuberculosis and aids centre, ‘Stepping Stone’- a shelter home for children in Margao, ‘Bailancho Ekvott’ a centre for women and ‘Centre for Childline,' Sneha Mandi-the old age home and road safety awareness in collaboration with JCI, Ponda The students conducted different activities in collaboration with these NGO’s like conducting drawing and dance competitions for children, teaching them craft by providing them the required material, helping them in their studies, counselling the children. The students helped in kitchen chores, prepared food for children and beggars, visited market slums and Sadhuband slums in Margao, conducted T.B and aids survey and collected statistic in Porvorim and Camrabhat, carried out rally in the city of Panjim to rescue the abused and needy children. They also made necklaces and bracelets for exhibition to fetch income for ‘Bailancho Ekvott.’ The students had interaction with inmates of the old age home. Cleaned the garden and the surrounding and conducted cultural program. Apart from NGO’s our students visited different schools like Panchasheel New English High School, Panchwadi, Government Primary School, Savoi Verem, M.I.B.K High School in Khandepar where they conducted remedial classes, drawing and dance competitions, taught craft to students. The students also cleaned the school premises. In collaboration of JCI, Ponda the students spread awareness on road safety in places like Mother of Mercy High school, Vacso, Janata Vachanalaya in Vacso municipality, Keshav Smruti Higher Secondary and participated in a rally. The students paid visits to Sateri temple, Shri Bhagwati temple, Shantadurga temple, cleaned the temples and the surrounding. Our students played the role of social workers in villages of Panchwadi, Savoi Verem, Khandepar by cleaning the garbage and handing it to the respective village panchayats, carried out rallies on issues like aids, drugs and tobacco. The students also arranged a talk for the villagers on the government schemes and shed light on different social issues through street plays. Venturing into the society to make a difference was possible because of the Principal Dr. Allan Abreu, Vice Principal Dr.Anna Neena George and all the professors of the college who motivated, guided and brought in the positive energy in students to go extra miles. As the students shared their experiences one could see a spark in their eyes. A feeling of satisfaction and joy lit their faces. The community service brought in a sense of responsibility in the students, they were filled with positivity, self-confidence and an urge to make this world a better place to live in.
